Building Protocols for Essential Oil Distillation

IMG_0391

Or should I say, the process of learning what NOT to do. In similar fashion to everything else in grad school, building methods and protocols for my research has been challenging. One of the biggest components of my project is to extract and evaluate the essential oils of the 14 different varieties of holy basil. 1st Semester Presentations and Workshops

*This post is part of a series of posts based on my research and experience as a masters student at UGA. To find out more go to my page Holy Basil Research.

If I could give advice to anyone about grad school, I would say one of the most important skills to learn is how to communicate effectively. I am happy to report, I have finished processing our first round of Holy Basil! After 4 months of work from seeding, to planting, to harvesting,  and finally processing, we have samples that are ready to go to the lab for analysis. The processing took about 4 times longer than expected, per usual. But everything went smoothly and I will tell you all about it. Continue reading

Lacto-Fermented Beet and Radish Slices

DSCF5241.JPG

Spicy radishes, sweet earthy beets, preserved by fermentation into a crunchy sour treat = DELICIOUS!

I made a jar of these lacto-fermented beet and radishes late in the spring with the last of the spring root vegetables and they went quickly. Fall root crops are about to be in season, and I want to share this recipe with you so you can be ready when the time comes to make these yourself!
